Real Madrid keeper Courtois goes AWOL after Lukaku Belgium captaincy row

Former Chelsea teammates Thibaut Courtois and Romelu Lukaku have fallen out over the Belgium captaincy.

Blues striker Lukaku, who spent last season on-loan at Inter Milan, was named new Belgium captain by coach Domenico Tedesco for the draw with Austria.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was a candidate and after being overlooked skipped training on Sunday, reports HLN.

In the absence of Manchester City star Kevin de Bruyne, Tedesco handed the captaincy to Lukaku with the plan to name Courtois skipper for the next Euro 2024 qualifier against Estonia.

"Thibaut Courtois is very important to us," Tedesco said on Saturday night. "I can't tell you how much I appreciate him.

"On Saturday I had a conversation with Romelu and Thibaut about the captaincy. Against Austria it was Lukaku, against Estonia, Thibaut gets the credit.

"It is important to us that he feels valued."
