Real Madrid captain Ramos fluffs Spain spotkick for Switzerland draw

Villarreal striker Gerard Moreno notched a late equaliser to save Real MadridSergio Ramos' blushes and earn Spain a 1-1 draw with Switzerland in 2020-21 UEFA Nations League Group 4 action on Saturday night at St. Jakob-Park in Basel.

The Swiss grabbed a lead in the first half through a sensational strike from Remo Freuler, but Spain looked poised to pull level in the second stanza, only to see Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer save Ramos's effort from the penalty spot on what was Ramos's 177th Spain cap, breaking the European record previously held by Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

It was the first penalty failure for Ramos since May 2018, a span of 25 attempts, but the Real Madrid man's historic night would get even worse later in the second half, as he had another penalty saved by Sommer.

La Roja looked to be on their way to another forgettable evening in Nations League play after last month's defeat to Ukraine, but Gerard Moreno would rise up and score a late goal to earn the visitors a big point.
