Sochaux have admitted that Rangers midfielder Maurice Edu is their number one transfer target this winter.

The French club have already had a £500,000 bid for the USA international turned down but the club's assistant manager, Stephane Gili, indicates they will return with an improved offer for the reigning Scottish champions.

"We are interested in bringing Maurice Edu to Sochaux. We have two or three other midfield targets, but it's fair to say Edu is our No1 target for the midfield position," Gili said.

"I cannot say if we have made an (improved) offer. We will be discussing transfer strategies with our president this evening."
