QPR coach Ramsey never saw Redknapp resignation coming

QPR caretaker boss Chris Ramsey admits Harry Redknapp's resignation was a shock this week.

Ramsey had been working with the academy away from Rangers' main training base at Harlington and was informed of Redknapp's decision by director of football Les Ferdinand, who now looks to take on a more significant role in the day-to-day business of the first team and is leading the search for a new manager.

"Les told me it is a caretaker situation, with me and Kevin Bond steadying the ship until they get someone in," Ramsey said. "It is always a surprise when you get a job of this stature in the Premier League.

"When the manager left, it was a shock to everybody. I knew he'd had an operation.

"He didn't go round moaning about it. We knew he had a knee problem but he kept soldiering on.

"Harry had his reasons and, let's be honest, Harry looks well but he's 67, coming up to 68 and when you start having physical problems sometimes you have to balance up: great career or the rest of your life.

"He's probably come to that situation where he's thinking 'this is more painful than I can bear' and he's thought 'I better make sure my health's in the right place'."
