Former Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill says they should move for Manchester United defender Harry Maguire.
Villa are expected to return to the market after losing Tyrone Mings for the season with an ACL injury.
"There was a lot of talk about the high line that Villa played, and of course, if you haven't got a real genuine pace at the back, then it's going to be a struggle," O'Neill told talkSPORT.
"But the game itself, I wouldn't be rushing to judgement over the one game. Aston Villa conceded a number of goals. Newcastle played very well and Villa could have scored one or two themselves.
"Mings is a loss, because you don't want to be losing players at this stage. Maybe Aston Villa might think about a late move for Maguire, and if I was Aston Villa manager I would be thinking about that.
"Aston Villa had a great season last year. The manager [Unai Emery] picked them up and got them into seventh. I know they're doing handstands over finishing seventh, when I finished top six for three consecutive years with them, but that's beside the point.
"Villa have got to look forward. I like the manager. He's proved himself as a terrific manager and I think they've got the wherewithal and I think they have the financial clout to do well too."
