Newcastle United are ready to compete with Liverpool for Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

The Daily Mail says the 23-year-old has been outstanding in recent weeks and has been earmarked by Liverpool after his recent man of the match performance against them.

However, Newcastle are also keen with continuing speculation over Tim Krul's future and veteran Steve Harper leaving in the summer.
