New Zealand's World Cup hopes took a massive blow on Wednesday night (Thursday morning AEDT) when they were hammered 5-1 by Mexico in the intercontinental World Cup playoff first leg.
The All Whites were beaten pillar to post in front of a packed Estadio Azteca crowd by Miguel Herrera's locally-based side and will now need to respond powerfully in Wellington in the return leg next week.
Goals from Paul Aguilar, Raul Jimenez, a brace from Oribe Peralta and Rafa Marquez gave the hosts the ascendency before Chris James pulled one back for New Zealand who will now be looking to turn the tide at in front of their own home support in seven days.
"It is always mission impossible for New Zealand," All Whites boss Ricki Herbert said after the defeat.
"New Zealand loves challenges.
"We have no false expectations. This is going to be a very difficult top match for us."
He added: "When we return home, Wellington will be a very tough place for Mexico."
