Mourinho confident Man Utd job safe; snappy about Woodward talks

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is confident his job is safe.

Mourinho faces a crunch week after United's alarming slide continued with defeat to West Ham on Saturday.

But asked ahead of Tuesday's Champions League tie with Valencia if his job was on the line, he responded: “No, I don't think (so)."

When quizzed about claims Zinedine Zidane had been in touch with him personally amid growing anticipation the Frenchman will succeed him at Old Trafford, Mourinho then tried to make a joke of the reports, claiming his phone had been bugged.

However he was serious when pushed if he'd spoken with vice-chairman Ed Woodward since the West Ham defeat.

“That's a private matter," he said. “I'm not asking you who you speak to today or this morning or your last phone call. That's a private matter, I'm not going to answer to you."

Mourinho, though, insists he is still the right man for the job.

He added: “What I can do to improve things, I do, and I will improve the things that depend on me and my work.

“It is a collective thing, the reason we don't win matches is the same reason we win matches, it's the responsibility of everybody.

“The performance on the pitch, the pitch in my opinion is the consequence of many factors."
