Former Manchester United forward Teddy Sheringham admitted to being surprised at the recent war of words at the club.
Manager Erik ten Hag criticized winger Jadon Sancho for not training to a high enough standard.
The winger then went onto social media and stated that he was being made a scapegoat.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Sheringham was asked about whether legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson would have taken a similar approach.
He said: “No, not at all. Very, very rarely anyway.
“The more you can keep things in-house, the more you can control them. Now with social media, people are going to have their say.
“It just brings more hype around the situation. I'm surprised that it has happened."
