Manchester United chief Ed Woodward rues handing Alexis Sanchez a club record salary last January.
Sanchez signed a four-and-a-half year deal when he moved to Old Trafford from Arsenal last January with a basic wage of around £350,000 per week.
That could increase to more than £500,000 a week with add-ons and he has struggled to repay that enormous investment.
And The Times reports chief executive director Woodward regrets making what he bereaves was a huge error of judgment.
Since being signed by former boss Jose Mourinho, Sanchez has made 42 appearances in all competitions and scored just five goals.
