Man Utd caretaker boss Carrick: Everyone should look at themselves; it's easy to look elsewhere

Manchester United caretaker manager Michael Carrick says it's been an emotional 24 hours for the club.

The Geordie steps in after the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and will be in charge tomorrow at Champions League opponents Villarreal.

He said today: "It's been an emotional time for everyone at club. I worked with Ole for three years and known him for a lot longer. To see him lose his job was tough for me and a lot of people at the club. You can tell be the emotion around the place yesterday. Ole will understand when he said results are everything and it's about creating the right foundation. I want to say a massive thank you from me and the staff as well as the players.

"I'll be preparing the team for tomorrow night and I know the boys very well. This club has been my life for a long time now and I'm ready to help the club for however long I'm needed. And then I'll go back to my job when someone else takes the job. I'm really looking forward to today and preparing the players but I'm really looking forward tomorrow.

"I've worked closely with Ole and we have very similar beliefs. I have my own personality to Ole but of course it's similar. That's why we worked well together. I'm not going to give away my plans just yet but you'll see it on the pitch."

Asked why it went wrong in recent weeks under Solskjaer, Carrick continued: "It's not to be looking back now. I could have done better. Everyone should look at themselves as it's easy to look elsewhere. I was the same as a player. Look at yourself and what you can improve. Now we have to catch a flight to Spain and prepare for the game tomorrow.

"I found out at the training ground yesterday morning. I don't think anyone did. I spoke to Ed when I arrived but that's how it came about. it was a bit of a rush to organise training but it went really well, all things considered, and did it in a classy manner, especially Ole. Shows the real class of the man and how humble he is. It's now about me preparing the team for tomorrow night.

"The biggest thing for the fans and everyone is the result. I could say all sorts of things and speak the truth about training and doing well but sitting here, I don't think that counts for much. It's all about results. It's how we carry ourselves. That's the challenge we embrace and respect massively. I expect that of the players."
