Man Utd boss Ten Hag delighted with matchwinner McTominay: More than super-sub

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag insists matchwinner Scott McTominay is more than a super-sub after their 2-1 win at Aston Villa.

McTominay jumped from the bench to head a late winner for the visitors.

Ten Hag said: "I think there were many stories in this game. We started very good, fantastic pressing, but then after we scored we dropped too much and were too deep as a team. We defended as a team but I think we have to be higher because we gave them too much initiative.

"Our defenders can defend well deep. They are concentrated but you are always vulnerable in such moments, for instance with corners. It is unnecessary and also in counter attacks we made the wrong decisions and it made it a tennis match. We should control the game better.

"You always have to see when an opponent equalises at home how the game progresses. It cost them a lot of power to get an equaliser and it gave us some space and we got more possession and scored a great goal.

On McTominay, he added: "He is [a super sub] but he can also start. You have to credit a player like Scott. He is an example for many players these days. There are not many players any more who are ready for every minute they can be on the pitch. Today we have seen another example. He is always ready to come on and make a difference."
