Man City require extra-time to edge Newcastle

Manchester City have progressed to the Capital One Cup quarter-finals courtesy of a 2-0 extra-time win over Newcastle United on Wednesday night.

Late goals from Alvaro Negredo and Edin Dzeko allowed City to get the better of the Magpies at St James' Park after Alan Pardew's men had deservedly taken the game to added time.

Manuel Pellegrini made 10 changes from the City side that lost to Chelsea on Saturday and in the end it paid off as Negredo opened the scoring, albeit belatedly, in the 99th minute when finishing a low cross from Dzeko.

Newcastle's hopes were then vanquished six minutes later thanks to Dzeko who received a pass from James Milner before rounding Toon keeper Tim Krul and slotting home.

Newcastle were unlucky not to score themselves earlier as City gloveman Costel Pantilimon made two top quality saves to deny Shola Ameobi and Papiss Cisse but the home side could not break down the visiting defence as the Eastlands club moved past the fourth round.
