Jamie Carragher believes that it will take a lot more than Virgil van Dijk to solve the defensive problems that his former side face in the Premier League.
Liverpool are coming off the back of a disappointing 1-0 defeat at Swansea. What makes the result even worse is that it is shortly after Liverpool managed to defeat Manchester City – the only team to achieve that feat this season.
Carragher believes that while van Dijk will improve Liverpool, he is not the sole solution to their defensive woes. As it happens, a van Dijk header ended up going to a Swansea player, who put it in the path of his teammate to score the only goal of the game.
"It is absolute nonsense that one player comes in and fixes the whole problem. He's not that good," said Carragher.
"He is obviously a good centre-back and he cost the club a lot of money but he is only one player. This idea that Virgil van Dijk is going to head away every set-piece is an absolute joke. It is not happening."
