Leicester midfielder Maddison's versatility turning off Southgate

Leicester City midfielder James Maddison's versatility is working against him for England.

Former Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United midfielder Carlton Palmer believes that could be down to the "free role" he is given at Leicester.

"I think he's an extremely talented player," Palmer said on talkSPORT.

"The one thing I would say, when I look at him, I don't really know what position he plays and I think that is the problem when it comes to the argument for England.

"He almost has a free role in the Leicester side. He's given carte blanche in the final third to create problems. He plays on the half turn, he's a very talented player when he does that. Travels well with the ball, got good delivery, he's a very, very talented player.

"But (England coach Gareth) Southgate's already got Foden, who's that similar type of player. He's also got Grealish, but Grealish is going to have to have a good second part of the season."
