Leeds forward Bamford declares World Cup ambitions

Leeds United forward Patrick Bamford is focused on winning a place in England's World Cup squad.

The Englishman is aiming to get back to full fitness in preseason after making just nine league appearances last year due to injury.

Bamford played 30 minutes in the friendly win over Brisbane Roar on Thursday night, and the 28-year-old hopes he can get back to full form.

"I was bit tired!", Bamford told LUTV post-match. "That's my first game in God knows how long. It was nice to be back out there, (we were) a bit rusty, but we'll get better with each game.

"I'm just trying to get my fitness up. Obviously I'm chasing a little bit because I had a little bit longer off. You have to get your fitness up, and then as a team, you have to get that winning mentality.

"Obviously for me I try and score goals, but it's about getting that winning mentality and confidence early on.

"It's always tough being out injured and watching on, and once I got injured against Wolves I gave myself a goal to aim towards; trying my best to put myself in contention for the World Cup. That was my focus and I was working hard every day to get back on the pitch."
