Landon Donovan admits he has plenty to do at club level before he is even considered for a USA call-up.
The LA Galaxy forward is back in action in MLS but knows that scoring one goal, as he did in the 2-0 win over Sporting Kansas City last weekend, is simply not enough to hang his hat on.
"I have to continue to build on what I did last weekend, and then at that point there's still no guarantee, either," said Donovan.
"Like (USA boss) Juergen (Klinsmann) said, I'm well behind the group in a lot of ways, and I'm aware of that. All I want is a chance to prove that I belong, and I'm going to have to work hard to get that chance."
He added: "I know how to motivate myself now. Juergen was asked a question, and he answered honestly. I would answer the same way if I were in his position. I don't need extra incentive. I'm motivated. I want to get back there. If it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen, but I'm going to try my best."
