Final Rooney call left to England coach Southgate

England coach Gareth Southgate will have the final say on DC United striker Wayne Rooney's Three Lions return.

The Sun says Southgate will have the final say on Rooney's involvement against the USA.

FA chiefs had to convince Southgate that the idea to celebrate Rooney's contribution to the Three Lions with a Wembley send-off was a good one.

And Southgate will now attempt to explain the recall when he names his squad tomorrow.

Rooney has been led to believe he will lead the team out as captain and start in his 120th and final England appearance.

But the FA backtracked after initially confirming yesterday that the option had been discussed — insisting he will get five or ten minutes at the end.

It has since emerged Southgate has taken control and will have the final call on the DC United striker's exact role after the botched handling of Rooney's comeback.
