Former Valencia star Vicente Guillot says today's football is seeing the emergence of a new era - the time of the winger.

With the likes Real Madrid dazzler Vinicius Junior, Barcelona whizkid Ansu Fati and Arsenal attacker Bukayo Saka all breaking through, Guillot admits he's excited seeing so many young wingers now making an impact at the top level of the game.

One of the great entertainers of his generation, Guillot played over 150 games for Valencia, where his popularity generated a fans' club, known as the 'Guillotistas'. A diminutive winger boasting great pace and dribbling ability, Guillot was at the forefront of a golden age for Los Che.

Still a hero for the Valencia support and Spanish fans in general, Guillot, now 81, is enjoying seeing today's generation of wide players lighting up stadiums.

Asked if the game still needs wingers, Guillot was emphatic in his response, telling Tribalfootball.com: "The answer is YES!

"In football, like in life, you have to be able to renew things and people and players. From what I can see, regarding the category of players we are talking about, they are footballers who could play for any international team in the world. They have done very well.

"These young players have their place in the world of football because 'we're all getting older' and fresh blood is needed. Youth is needed and this new 'juventud' is very good. It's a very positive sign that football is in a healthy state."

Among those emerging this year has been Manchester United's Argentina U20 attacker Alejandro Garnacho. The former Atletico Madrid trainee having decided to commit to Argentina over his birth nation - a decision Guillot was sorry to see made.

He added: "Yes, it's a loss for Spain and a gain for Argentina, of course, because Garnacho is a really great player. Actually, he's a phenomenal footballer."
