Exclusive: Juan Sanchez declares Iago Aspas Celta Vigo's greatest; recalls 'good guy' Makelele

Former Celta Vigo star Juan Sanchez has declared Iago Aspas the greatest striker the club has seen.

Aspas, now 35, has played a staggering 427 games for Celta over two spells, scoring 190 goals in the process.

Regarded as genuine legend amongst Celta fans, Aspas, who also had spells with Liverpool and Sevilla, can also be rated as a club great, insists Sanchez.

He told Tribalfootball.com: “Iago Aspas is an impressive player in all aspects of a striker's game, capable of winning games by himself.

"Undoubtedly, he is the best striker I have seen in the history of Celta."

Sanchez, himself, had two spells with Celta spanning seven years in total. While he won the UEFA Cup and two LaLiga titles with Valencia, the former striker says Celta is also a major part of his football life.

He continued: “Yes, Celta will always be important and special for me.

"I played seven years there, I arrived very young and Celta gave me the opportunity to experience playing football in the Primera Liga over quite a long period.

"I experienced some very special moments there. I have a great affection for its people and the city of Vigo. Also, my eldest daughter (Paula) was born there."

During his first stage with Celta, Sanchez was able to call on Claude Makelele as a teammate. The French midfielder would later go onto to win the World Cup, while also enjoying great success with Real Madrid and Chelsea.

Sanchez recalls his time with Makelele fondly, declaring his impact on the rest of the squad was immediate.

“When Makelele arrived, he surprised us immediately… a great footballer with a really strong physique and stamina," says Sanchez.

"He was remarkable, with an impressive physical power in defence. He ran and recovered countless balls and offensively he played with ease and finesse.

"He was also a very good guy. At that time, it would be true to say that we could not know where he was going to play later… regarding big clubs. He had an impressive career."
