Exclusive: Ex-Liverpool star Walters warns against 'risky' January signing

Former Liverpool star Mark Walters believes the club would be taking a risk signing a player during the January transfer window.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has lost Dejan Lovren, Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold to injury in recent weeks.

Reports have suggested Klopp could try and sign either a midfielder or defender who could provide cover and experience to the squad as the club attempts to end their 29-year wait for a league title.

However, the German has stated that he would be content to go ahead with his current squad if a transfer did not eventuate.

And Walters, who made over 100 appearances for the Reds, believes Klopp should follow that tact.

"The problem with signing players midseason is that they don't always hit the ground running," Walters told TribalFootball.com. "And also they can disrupt the squad a little bit, you just don't know whats going to happen.

"So I think it's a risk to sign players midseason. Young players who might in and around the first team at the moment wouldn't be a bad thing someone who's good to squad as opposed to somebody going straight to the team.

"It's a difficult one though because there are a lot of games in the Premier League and all you need is one injury to curtail your season.

"I think if they can get the right player then it would be good to have addition during the season, but it's a difficult one because it can upset the squad if you get the wrong player. If I was the manager I would be getting a player who can boost the squad rather than play straight away because the team is doing quite well now at the moment."

One player Klopp has not replaced this season is Philippe Coutinho. Despite his indifferent form this season at Barcelona, the Brazilian was undoubtedly a huge success at Anfield.

This summer, the Reds purchased Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri to play in the more advanced midfield role that Coutinho had occupied.

The former has struggled with inconsistency and injury, while Shaqiri has developed into an impact player rather than a mainstay in Klopp's starting line-up.

The Merseyside club have done well without Coutinho, currently sitting top of the Premier League, and Walters adds that players within the squad, such as Daniel Sturridge, could already fill the vacant position.

"Well let's get it straight. Coutinho's a world class player. Not only has he scored goals but he's created a lot of goals as well. Would he get in the team now? Of course he would. If Sturridge can stay fit, he could be the Coutinho if you'd like," adds Walters..

"But Coutinho is a world-class player so there's not many players like him in the world never mind. I would say he's irreplaceable but you've got spend 100m odd pounds to sign a player of his type."
