Ex-Spurs boss Redknapp mixed feelings over Rooney England recall

Former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has questioned the decision to recall DC United striker Wayne Rooney for an England farewell game.

Redknapp has admitted he is not entirely comfortable about handing out caps as goodwill gestures.

He told the Mirror: “I like Wayne, I get on well with him and his record speaks for itself. He was a fantastic player for England and it's fine by me if we want to celebrate his achievements.

“But I can understand why some people might think it makes the game a bit of a circus – and England have got an important game (a Nations League decider against Croatia) three days later.

“That said, we've given caps to people who haven't earned them in the past – I'm not going to name names – and you do wonder how on earth they got them.

“Some players who have been picked by England wouldn't have got anywhere near the team in Bobby's era, when you had to be a star player to get in the squad.

“When you look back and see fantastic players like Howard Kendall and Billy Bonds never won a single England cap, it makes you wonder. But I can't get too angry and upset if England want to give Rooney a send-off because we've treated our greatest players so badly in the past.

“I suppose they (the FA) are trying to make up for past mistakes."
