Ex-Real Madrid keeper Canizares: Kepa good - but he cannot replace Courtois

Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Santi Canizares says they're missing Thibaut Courtois.

While a fan of Kepa Arrizabalaga, Canizares insists the Chelsea loanee isn't in Courtois' class.

He told Radio Marca: "Madrid arrived, but they were bad in defence, allowing those crosses and occupying the area poorly. The area is not occupied based on where the ball is, but rather where the opponent is. Furthermore, the best goalkeeper in the world is not there and one of the better centre-backs either. The others are not bad, but Courtois intervenes 50 times more than Kepa in aerial balls.

"Militao reads balls into the area very well, Alaba was not good, he did not make good decisions (against Atletico Madrid)."

Expanding on Kepa, Canizares continued: "For me he is top in the world, he is among the 10 best goalkeepers in the world. But he has come to replace the best, Courtois, and he has no substitute.

"Is Kepa a great goalkeeper? Yes. Does Courtois have a substitute, is there someone who could look like Courtois, that you put him in the goal and it doesn't show? No. Courtois is number 1 and is the one with the most winning actions in a season.

"Kepa perhaps could have intervened in a cross if he was further out of the goal, not under the posts. But they are not his mistakes, the errors come much earlier, before the play is generated. He should be a little more outside and be encouraged to intervene in the aerial game. Under the goal he is a guy who manages distances very well and takes extraordinary balls."
