Ex-Man Utd Ulster pair happy Evans re-signed

Former Northern Ireland internationals Pat McGibbon and Luke McCullough have praised a compatriot.

The two former Manchester United youth stars believe Jonny Evans can contribute at Old Trafford this term.

Evans signed a one-year deal in a huge surprise this summer, after he was released by Leicester City last season.

“I was with Jonny at United and Northern Ireland — many people have said it but he never should have been let go from United," said McCullough, per the Belfast Telegraph.

“I would be in touch with him sometimes, I was very friendly with him and Corry.

“He's certainly not slowing down and United look like they need him.

“He's a player who puts everyone at ease and he must be the best Northern Ireland defender that I can remember.

“Jonny can still do a job for United and help out the younger players.

“I think his family are based there so it suits him.

“To reach 100 caps is an unbelievable achievement.

“I was surprised that Jonny left United when he did but he has proven what a terrific defender he is," McGibbon added.

“It's great to see him still alongside top class players.

“Jonny will need be managed right, also by himself.

“The game has moved on and the sports science has really developed.

“I'm sure Jonny looks after himself and when he pulls on the jersey he is still a class act.

“It's an amazing achievement to reach 100 caps despite all the fitness challenges he has faced in recent seasons, hopefully he will get a few more before he feels the time is right to retire."
