Ex-Juventus chief Secco: I had deal for Liverpool midfielder Mascherano

Former Juventus sports director Alessio Secco has revealed they could have signed Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano when they were relegated to Serie B.

Secco rates Mascherano and Real Madrid midfielder Rafael van der Vaart as the two big regrets he has during his time in charge at Juve.

He said: "I had Mascherano in January 2007, I got him," declared Secco. "He would come on loan, also in Serie B.

"But the club told me that we could not sign him, because of the issues with his registration involving a club and investors - and Juve have a code of ethics. It makes you cry.

"Liverpool took him shortly after."

Secco added: "Van der Vaart in the summer of 2009 was one. And also (Sampdoria striker) Antonio Cassano, two or three years ago, we had him in hand.

"But there were questions on the part of someone (inside Juve), but I knew that Antonio was no longer an enfant terrible."
