England Under-21s manager Lee Carsley has challenged Harvey Elliott to become a senior player for the Three Lions.

Liverpool midfielder Elliott has seen his fellow Under-21 Kobbie Mainoo get into the senior squad for this international break.

Mainoo came off the bench in a 1-0 loss to Brazil and may start against Belgium later today.

“I'm not sure (how close Harvey is)," Carsley told reporters before an Under-21s European Championship qualifier.

“But if he's playing week in, week out for Liverpool, scoring and assisting, being really important in that team, then he will put himself in the frame.

“It's a big ask (to force your way into the squad for the Euros). If you're playing week in, week out in the Premier League at a really high level, then you're always in with a chance.

“You're generally only one or two injuries away from getting the opportunity. The main thing is that they're putting themselves in the race."
