England boss Hodgson expecting improvement from Man Utd ace Rooney

England manager Roy Hodgson has urged Wayne Rooney to bounce back from his sub-par performance on the weekend.

The Manchester United forward was not at his best in England's 0-0 draw with the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on Sunday and although Hodgson excused him for the showing, he has implored him to respond in the weekend's vital Euro2016 qualifier against Slovenia in Ljubljana.

"We know what our players are capable of and sometimes even the important ones don't live up to expectations and don't have a good game," he said.

"It applies to any team in the world - if your good players are not really performing like the players everyone knows they are, you are in a bit of trouble.

"If Lionel Messi had had a wretched game in the Champions League final, he couldn't do anything with the ball, he was falling over every time he got it, that could have really hurt Barcelona.

"There will be players who are criticised for their performances and they will have to accept that and hopefully use it as a spur to make sure it doesn't happen against Slovenia."
