Dutch great Kieft: Ronaldo and Messi now facing retirement

Dutch great Wim Kieft believes Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are both facing retirement.

Ronaldo left Juventus to return to Manchester United this season, while Messi left Barcelona for PSG.

Kieft said: “Ronaldo and Messi are the best footballers of this century together. They shared almost all the main prizes, all the golden balls and individual Champions League awards together. Their track record is enormous. Only after so many years you just have to conclude that the best is done."

On Ronaldo, he continued: “Many football fans find him an annoying guy, because his personality doesn't appeal to people that much. But if you look at Messi, his situation is even worse, he doesn't do anything anymore.

PSG doesn't seem to be the club where he belongs, they don't play the football he was used to at Barcelona. His whole adventure in Paris so far has been one big disappointment. What would it be that such a boy does not feel out of place?

"It also seems to be something psychological and proves that even such great stars are just ordinary people."

Kieft also wrote for De Telegraaf: "It's actually amazing that those 'oldies' can keep going for so long. When you see how many years in a row they have a top match every three days, you are shocked.

“They do an awful lot to keep fit. We all know how hard Ronaldo trains. With Messi I often have the idea that he does it more on intuition and class. But being a rush hour is also a stressful existence. Always having to score goals and meet high expectations. That is why respect for them remains in order."
