Driessen slams Ajax over Henderson deal

Dutch pundit Valentijn Driessen says Ajax have made a mistake signing Jordan Henderson.

The former Liverpool captain has joined Ajax on a free transfer from Al-Ettifaq.

But Driessen told De Telegraaf's podcast: “He had a conversation with (Jurgen) Klopp in the spring of 2023 and he told him that he would no longer be in his plans. Then Henderson concluded that there was no future for him at Liverpool.

“Of course that didn't happen for nothing. Klopp also saw that he could no longer cope with Liverpool's level. That should be the savior of Ajax, but he won't be. That boy is just on his way out. He didn't go to Saudi Arabia for nothing.

“He will also not come to really make others better, like Dusan Tadic and Daley Blind did that. The best man is 33, he can no longer walk. Clubs such as FC Barcelona and Juventus have said 'no' for good reason. So I don't think that's a good choice by Ajax.

“He has always played with great players around him who pay off when he plays, but Kenneth Taylor will not play better because of Henderson. Taylor has simply not shown anything in the past six months, while at Ajax they expected that he might take that leadership role."
