Released Arsenal midfielder Matt Smith has joined Wigan Athletic.

Smith has signed a three-year deal with the Latics.

Latics boss Shaun Maloney said: “I'm really happy that Matt has agreed to come. We've worked very hard to get him, and with what happened over the summer, we were late to convince him to come to us ahead of others.

“Technically, he is a very good midfielder and really understands time and space. We've pushed really hard to get him and he's very important to how we are looking to play this year. It's a big move for him and for us."

Smith also stated: "It's a big opportunity for me to play for a Club of this stature, and I'm buzzing to have got the deal done. I'm looking forward to the season and getting started."
