Derby ace Hughes eager to get one over boyhood club Liverpool

Derby County's Will Hughes has expressed his desire to beat boyhood club Liverpool in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night.

The Rams prepare to square off against Premier League side Liverpool at the iPro Stadium in the third round of the league cup and the match will hold special significance for midfielder Hughes.

Hughes was a big supporter of Liverpool during his childhood days and ahead of the encounter against the Reds, the 21-year-old has stated that he keen on getting one over the Anfield club who he has admired since he was a youngster.

The England U21 international said: "I have not been to a final when they've won it and hopefully it doesn't happen this year!

"Everyone knows we're going into the game as underdogs but stranger things have happened than us beating Liverpool at home and there are always shocks in most rounds of this competition.

"Hopefully that can be us."

Regarding his love for Liverpool, Hughes added: "Steven Gerrard, with the way he played, the way he went about his game and his demeanour was my favourite player growing up and I followed him quite closely.

"I used to go quite a bit to watch them when I was younger and an academy player but obviously it's a lot more difficult nowadays.

"That was Xabi Alonso, Javier Mascherano, Fernando Torres and Gerrard in their prime. It wasn't a bad team.

"Why Liverpool? I couldn't really tell you. They were just the team I followed growing up so you can't say I was a glory supporter because they weren't very successful in that period.

"I just had an admiration for them and followed them ever since."
