Former England defender Ashley Cole believes Harry Maguire needs to up his game to stay in the starting line up.

Maguire has been a regular for England under Gareth Southgate, even before his move to Manchester United last summer.

However, Cole believes Maguire's recent form for club and country, and the emergence of Conor Coady, has put his position under threat.

"It's a tough one," Cole told Sky Sports when England's defensive options.

"On performances of late I would say no [Maguire should not be in the team], but who after him is there? Maybe a (Joe) Gomez, maybe Conor Coady.

"For now Maguire is a first choice but for sure his Premier League form has not been great.

"It's probably helped him coming here in the England setup, a friendly environment, for him to understand his performance needs to go up a level if he wants to keep his place in this squad."
