Chelsea legend Ray Wilkins has slammed Dutch fitness coach Raymond Verheijen for his comments about the England national team.

England suffered an embarrassing exit from the European Championships at the hands of minnows Iceland and following their elimination, Verheijen had stated that he was not surprised with the Three Lions' failure.

Verheijen told talkSPORT: "It's obviously a structural problem you have with your national team, as the last time you reached the semi-final was 1996.

"I was not surprised at all [when England were knocked out]. If you are playing in the Premier League with all these games at this extreme intensity, and you don't have a winter break, you accumulate fatigue over time.

"How on earth are the England players able to recover from the season, regain freshness and prepare for the tournament? It's impossible!"

Former Chelsea star and coach Wilkins certainly took an exception to Verheijen's comments regarding the England national team and called into talkSPORT to slam the Dutchman.

Wilkins said: "I was wondering who the Dutch were playing in the next round! Raymond, first and foremost, is a fitness coach. Do not talk tactically about football. If that was Rene Meulensteen, Guus Hiddink, Johan Cruyff, God bless him, I would listen. You are a fitness coach; get on with what you do!

"He keeps going on about 'we're not fit enough'; that's a load of garbage. We won the World Cup in 1966 without a [winter] break - we played 42 league games.

"I would suggest the Dutch, especially at this moment in time, just stay a little bit quiet until the next World Cup!"
