Celta Vigo coach Benitez rejects sack talk

Celta Vigo coach Rafa Benitez is confident he is safe in his job.

It's been suggested Benitez could be sacked if Celta fail to defeat Almeria this weekend.

But he says: “I continue to maintain one thing no matter how much it bothers someone. This is a marathon and you have to continue until the end. We have to remember where we come from.

"In last year's marathon it accelerated in the final stretch and the furniture was saved. For this year, obviously, this is a very important game and it can give us a break and confidence or it can put more pressure on us. From here to the end many things can happen, there are many teams that can have different situations in Europe, being down, in the middle of the table without anything at stake... Our obligation as professionals is to maintain a competitive team, continue fighting, working, commit less mistakes and have more successes."

Benitez also said: “After so many years you focus on what depends on you. Experience helps you make less wrong decisions in stressful situations. On the field I hope that the fans, who are very intelligent, support the team from the beginning to the end because the team shows its face. Then we make mistakes, but the team stands up. If we are all united we are stronger. Football is capricious and when things don't work out we start to think about it.

"We don't think about whether there is a fire in Valencia or politics, but we think much more about football.

“We are here and we have to handle it."
