Celta Vigo coach Benitez admits defensive problems after Villarreal defeat

Celta Vigo coach Rafa Benitez was left frustrated after defeat at Villarreal.

Villarreal were 3-0 ahead before Celta staged a second-half fight-back before falling short.

Benitez said: "I am disappointed with what we did in the first half, I think we lacked that intensity that we had shown in other games and that we clearly showed In the second half.

"In the first we arrived late and if you analyse the goals they were too easy, we had already corrected in the last games but we have given too many chances. The reaction in the second half is what you expect from the team, they show their faces, fight, move the ball and create chances and you regret not having scored the third goal. Everything we didn't do well in the first half, we did in the second half.

"At 2-0 it was a pretty weak and bad first half on our part. We started the second with three changes and tried to adjust and give another breath and we concede the third. The reaction was very good and we have been more aggressive in the dispute and had more ball handling but the sad thing is that we did it when we were losing 3-0, when we should have done it from the beginning."

On their defending, Benitez added: "When you play well or badly you can draw many conclusions. Sometimes due to poor positioning, sometimes due to carelessness, sometimes due to lack of quality and sometimes due to mistakes by the coach who made a mistake. The analysis must be done calmly, when you get to this position, with the goals we concede, you realise that something is not working in the defensive structure.

"This is a team that concedes a lot of goals, in recent years too. It is something that we have to continue working on and improve. We created many chances but we lack that success. We have to find that balance."
