Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has welcomed the arrivals of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin to Old Trafford.

Both of the new signings will compete with Carrick for a starting place in United's midfield and he believes that strength of the squad and competition for spots will only benefit the club.

"Competition for places is good. Over the years there has always been competition for places at this club," the veteran told the club's official website.

"As players, you want the best players here and you want the squad to be as strong as possible and challenging for everything we're involved and, to do that, you need the best players and the strength in depth," Carrick added.

The 33-year-old signed a one-year extension to his United contract back in March.
