Campbell exclusive: Xhaka could handle Arsenal icons Adams, Wright; he's proved me wrong

Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell says such is Granit Xhaka's personality that the Swiss would thrive in any dressing room of any Gunners era.

After falling out with fans and being stripped of the club captaincy three years ago, Xhaka has revived his career over the past 12 months to become arguably the most influential player at the club.

Indeed, while he no longer wears the captain's armband officially, Xhaka has stood in for skipper Martin Odegaard at time this season. A decision he made not lightly given the way he lost the armband all those years ago.

For Campbell, who spent ten years at Arsenal, Xhaka's return to form and favour is no surprise. And he has paid the Swiss the ultimate compliment, insisting Xhaka's old school approach would see him live comfortably with the big Arsenal personalities of his era like Tony Adams and Ian Wright.

Speaking to Tribalfootball.com, on behalf of Mr Gamble, Campbell said: "I think Granit would be able to integrate into the old school dressing room I was in because he is 100% committed to the cause, which you had to be in that environment.

"I think there's a misunderstanding when it comes to Granit Xhaka.

"The red cards he's had in the past tend to cloud the judgement people have about him.

"What he did with the shirt and all of that when it happened, I didn't like and at the time I was the first to voice my opinion and I even said he shouldn't play for the club again.

"But the fact of the matter is he's at Arsenal and if he's going to play, then I've got to back him.

"Seeing him play previously I would say he's always been a good player, but he hasn't hit the level that we're seeing so far this season, that's for sure.

"I think having better players to play with and a clearer defining role in the team has helped him."

Campbell, who boasts Arsenal winner's medals from the First Division, FA Cup, League Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup, states the key to Xhaka taking his football to a new level this season has been the arrival of Oleks Zinchenko. The Ukraine international signing over the summer from Manchester City.

Campbell continued: "We saw a different Granit Xhaka because of Zinchenko coming in. Zinchenko can release Xhaka further forward because he's a midfielder playing at left-back.

"He can play that advanced full-back role that slots into midfield better than anyone.

"Which means we now see Granit Xhaka making an impact at the top of the pitch where he's scoring goals and getting assists.

"He's in the opposition box so much more this season and it's allowing him to influence the games in an attacking manner.

"To me it looks like the fans have changed their mind about Granit Xhaka and it takes quite a bit for fans to do that, especially with what happened.

"But the best thing Xhaka did after that was to keep quiet and let his football do the talking.

"I think that's the best way to do it, he's let his football do the talking and now he's one of the main players at Arsenal.

"He's probably one of the main men in the dressing room as well which shows how vital he's become for Mikel Arteta both on and off the pitch."
