Hull City boss Steve Bruce admits he offered his resignation after their relegation last year.
His four-year reign could end if they lose against Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley today.
Bruce, 55, revealed: “I wanted to give them that opportunity that I would fall on my sword because I think that's the right thing to do.
“I offered my resignation because of the disappointment of relegation and made it easy for them if they wanted to make a change — but they were adamant they didn't.
“The chairman and Ehab talked me round. They both wanted me to stay so I said to them, 'Have a week on it because we've got to make huge changes' — and that's what we did.
“We went away for a week and I came back and said, 'If you want me to carry on then, OK, let's have a crack'.
“I just wanted to make sure there wasn't going to be a fire sale where they would sell everybody because at one stage that was the fear, that everybody was going to walk through the door."
