Bjornebye exclusive: AGF and Liverpool working together; Reds fans love loyalty

AGF Aarhus sporting director Stig-Inge Bjornebye admits the prospect of developing a closer relationship with Liverpool is on the table.

Bjornebye spent eight years with the Reds, between 1992 to 2000, winning the League Cup in 1995 and playing for the likes of Roy Evans and Graeme Souness, who initially signed the then Norway left-back from Rosenborg.

The Norwegian, now 53, took charge of AGF two years ago after four years as sporting director at Rosenborg. Bjornebye admits he made the move to Denmark for the challenge after helping RBK dominate the Eliteserien during his time in charge.

Now with AGF, Bjornebye says his ties with Liverpool remain deep and informal discussions have been regularly held about working more closely together.

He told Tribalfootball.com: "It's been very informal, not formal. My contact with Liverpool is professional, but informal, as it was such a big part of my life, Liverpool.

"I lived there for 12 years. I supported them since I was six along with my father. They've been a major, major, major part of my life. It's like a marriage."

Indeed, it's that relationship which has seen Bjornebye regularly discuss strategy and scouting with counterparts at Liverpool.

He continued: "So I do speak with them. We speak about experience and things on the strategic level.

"Also, we do discuss players, which we have done with them several times. It's about keeping that respect going both ways.

"I really do feel respected when I go back and I like to do the same for them.

Bjornebye is a regular visitor to Liverpool and Anfield and admits he remains popular with local Reds fans.

"One of the things regarding respect is that it's been 23 years since I played for them. There's since been a lot of former players pass through the club!

"But I do get contacted by the Liverpool world every week, every month.

"It's fantastic. In England, they're better than anyone else. They treat loyalty very different to anywhere else. Loyalty is more important there than even if you were the top goalscorer, but were only there for the one year."

Having finished fourth in the Superliga regular season, AGF are currently featuring in the playoffs.
