Barcelona teammates urge Pique to 'focus on football' after chaotic Sunday

Barcelona players are urging Gerard Pique to focus on his football after Sunday's referendum chaos.

Barca staged their Sunday victory over Las Palmas in front of an empty Nou Camp after clashes at polling booths in the morning. Pique had argued before kickoff for the players not to appear, but was overruled.

Diario Gol reports there is tension between Pique and Lionel Messi, with suspicions that the defender wants to use the team as his personal political platform.

Messi struck twice in the 3-0 win on Sunday and for one of the goals, Pique was clear for a tap in. The Argentine instead chose to score himself, which saw Pique barely celebrate with his teammates. The feeling was Pique was desperate to score on the day to send a message to authorities.

In contrast, Barca's players want to move on from the politics and focus on their football. Pique has been made aware that he is not the spokesman for the team and should not use his teammates for his political views.

The players just want to focus on their football.
