Attacking inefficiency and defensive blunders cost us - Germany's Schweinsteiger

Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger was gutted after losing last night's Euro2012 semi-final to Italy.

The more-fancied Die Mannschaft fell 2-1 to an Azzurri side led by a Mario Balotelli brace to miss out on a potential final meeting with Spain and the manner of the defeat made it even harder to handle for Schweinsteiger.

"Of course we are disappointed and sad that we lost the game. We all hoped for something else," he told ARD.

"Unfortunately, this match did not go the way we imagined. We had the chances to take the lead, then we fell behind in an unnecessary situation.

"Then the second goal came from a break after our set-play. That really should not happen because we all know that Balotelli is a player who plays on the last man in the offside trap."
