Athletic Bilbao coach Valverde keen to continue momentum against Valencia

Athletic Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde wants to take their winning momentum into tonight's clash with Valencia.

The home triumph against Cádiz broke a five-match winless streak in LaLiga Santander and Valverde is keen to see Los Leones kick on and string together a run of results.

"We want to back up our last week's win by getting another three points tomorrow at Mestalla," Valverde said at a pre-match press conference on Friday evening.

"Our goal is to replicate all the good things we do at San Mames away from home as well. We'll need to be clinical against a team that are not at their best right now. What we're interested in is playing our game and bringing back all three points."

The hosts are in a moment of turmoil. A run of six games without a win stretching back to November has led to Valencia dismissing Gennaro Gattuso and putting temporary manager Voro in change.

Valverde added: "The most important thing is what happens on the pitch. They're in a delicate moment, but we have to focus purely on the football. They're a bit anxious because they're not getting good results, but that gives you an idea of how evenly matched LaLiga is.

"If you don't pick up points, you go down. They're a good team and they have the potential to play well. We have to be careful and go out with every intention of winning the match."

When asked about the Zurigorri's Copa quarter-final win over Los Che at Mestalla a couple of weeks ago, Valverde said no two matches are ever the same.

"The circumstances aren't the same. You have to play according to the match at hand and make sure things go our way. But we know how difficult it is to win when the opponents are desperate for points.
