Arsenal are ready to step up their bid for Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen.

The Daily Express says the Gunners are keen to land £10m-rated Vertonghen, who can play in the centre of defence or at left-back, but manager Arsene Wenger wants to create space within his squad.

Sebastien Squillaci and Johan Djourou could both be offloaded to make room for the Belgian.
