The Blades went into the international break fifth in the table while Wednesday, under Garry Monk, are eighth in the Championship table.

Bannan told The Star: "It's hard to look at Sheffield United and not be a bit envious.

"It's not nice seeing them doing well, but you've got to give them credit where credit's due. Hopefully this time next year we're the ones up there and they're back down here.

"It depends how you've been brought up when it comes to rivalries. I've been brought up with the Celtic-Rangers rivalry, so wherever I've been I've had that instilled in me.

"From being a Celtic fan and not liking Rangers I went to Aston Villa and it was Birmingham. Now I'm here it's Sheffield United.

"I wouldn't say there's jealously, but it gives you that extra hunger to go out and try and get there."

The winger started four of Wednesday's opening five Championship matches under caretaker boss Lee Bullen.

But since the appointment of Garry Monk, Murphy has struggled to oust Kadeem Harris and Adam Reach from the starting eleven

Murphy told The Star: It is tough, but you've just got to keep grinding it out.

I'm enjoying it, but I want to play games. From time to time you're not going to be in the team.

"When you've got two wingers in front of you that are doing a good job, then you have to wait your turn and be patient with it."

Williamson is remembered fondly by Newcastle fans for his outstanding and calm displays in the heart of their defence for several seasons.

The English centre-back played for the Magpies from 2010 to 2016, before leaving for Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Many Magpies fans were disappointed when the club failed to renew the contract of Rafa Benitez in the summer, replacing him with Bruce instead.

The new season has been a predictable struggle for Newcastle, though results are on the upturn - particularly after victory at West Ham United on Saturday.

While most fans were expecting a tough season, they do not feel Bruce has the same managerial pedigree as Benitez, who successively kept them in the Premier League on a shoestring budget.

In an exclusive interview with Tribalfootball, ex-defender Williamson insists Bruce is well liked in the Magpies dressing room.

Williamson, now Gateshead player-manager, said: "Newcastle have been a massive part of my life. My thoughts on Newcastle is that it's an amazing club and it's a challenge that somebody like Steve Bruce, a homegrown guy, would not be able to turn down.

"Every single meeting I've come across with Steve Bruce I can only speak very, very highly of him.

"He's a genuine nice guy who loves football and a lot of people have told me how much he is respected within the changing room.

"It's also going to be a difficult situation following the appointment of Rafa Benitez with kind of expectation and things like that.

"But the fact is he is just a genuine and honest guy and I think it's going to take him time but so long as he gets that opportunity then he's got every chance of succeeding."

The Blades have been impressive on their return to the Premier League, while fierce rivals Sheffield Wednesday are battling in the Championship.

"I see more and more Sheffield United shirts around town," the Blades boss said in an interview with Sky Sports.

"We've got a fantastic opportunity, if the club gets it right, to rule the city for the next twenty, thirty years.

"We want to dominate this city because that's how we are - and the other lot are exactly the same. They might not say it - and they might say, 'Oh, he's talking about us again' - but that's how it is.

"We want to be an established Premier League club, we want to dominate the city, we want Sheffield United shirts all around, we want 30,000 at every game."

"It was a very special night and a lot of my family and friends were here.

"I grew up looking at this stadium from when I was a young boy, so to play here and do what I have tonight is very special.

The victory came after a disappointing home loss to Sheffield United over the weekend.

Speaking after the game, manager Marco Silva said: "It was important to see Dominic Calvert-Lewin score twice in the game - we deserved to win, it was clear for me. We controlled the game.

"I would have liked to see us create more chances in the second half but that is something for us to work on."

Silva pulled no punches with a calculated assault to shake his players from their complacency.

Speaking about the lame capitulation against the Blades, he said: In some moments many players were hiding and didn't give solutions.

It is not the moment for anyone to hide."

Silva insisted he too was showing there can be no hiding any longer, with his frank words, and he insisted it was time for a hard-hitting truth for everyone connected to Everton.

The moment is like I am here with you, and I said it inside the dressing room too - there is nowhere we can hide, we have to show stronger character and personality," he warned.

The Sheffield Wednesday game is really important yes. Now I don't want anyone hiding, not me, not them. It is a moment for us to go and play football and to take responsibility as well.

In the second half (against Sheffield United) I didn't see that ability. Football is about playing, and showing strong character."
