The Sun says Drinkwater was battered by thugs after trying to bed another footballer's girlfriend.

The Chelsea star, 29, on loan at Burnley, clashed with the player after boozing heavily at Manchester's Chinawhite club.

He was thrown out by security before a gang of up to six men attacked him with a blunt object. A source said: It was incredibly nasty with blood everywhere."

Thugs jumped on the footballer's ankle in the vicious nightclub attack and chanted: Break his legs."

When Scunthorpe United's Kgosi Ntlhe asked him to leave his girlfriend alone, 35million-rated midfielder Drinkwater lashed out.

The pair scuffled before bouncers at Manchester's Chinawhite club ejected Drinkwater. Outside up to six men jumped on him, leaving him with horrendous" injuries.

A source said: At one point he was curled up in a ball on the ground, as they repeatedly jumped up and down on his ankle and shouting, 'Break his legs'."

They knew he was a Premier League star and it was his livelihood. There was blood everywhere, and it was all incredibly nasty."

Ed Woodward, not so much. But the Manchester United manager certainly will be happy...

The Leicester City boss did Solskjaer a big favour on Tuesday. While Solskjaer had refused to drop Harry Maguire's name when pressed about his shopping list, Rodgers simply let it all hang out. And in doing so, granted his counterpart a huge lift.

Having handed his England defender a first preseason runout, Rodgers refused to mess the media around after victory over Scunthorpe United. Yes, there's been bids tabled. Yes, United are an attractive proposition. But no, the offers made haven't met their valuation.

"Of course, he has attracted interest with two bids coming in but they nowhere near meet the valuation of the club," declared Rodgers.

"We are all pretty relaxed because until our valuation is met, there doesn't need to be a decision."

So there's still some work to do. But Solskjaer will be delighted. Rodgers has left no-one in doubt. Particularly both Maguire and the United support. United want the defender. And it's now up to their vice-chairman exec to get a deal done.

Rodgers' revelation of two bids - two bids falling well short. It's simply confirming Woodward's approach to this summer market so far. Negotiations with Swansea City for Daniel James dragged on. Finding common ground with Crystal Palace for Aaron Wan-Bissaka took even longer. In both instances, Woodward entered talks with low-ball offers - before eventually settling on terms nearer to the selling club's valuation than his own. If all goes to plan, the same process will lead Maguire to being snapped at Carrington ahead of a medical by the weekend.

For some, including Woodward, at the 90m Leicester are quoting, United are being taken for a ride. But getting Maguire through the door, no matter the price, will mean more to this United dressing room than simply another new face.

At 26. As an established England international. And given his playing background - from Sheffield United to Hull City to the Foxes. Maguire would arrive at United as their most significant signing of the post Sir Alex Ferguson era. Even more so than Paul Pogba.

As celebrated as the Frenchman's arrival was, it was done on the understanding that United were simply a stepping stone. Mino Raiola, Pogba's agent, making it clear it would be three years in before a return to the continent.

In Maguire's case, this is it. United or bust. A player not to build a team around. But upon. A centre-half to lead. Cajole. Inspire. One who will make those around him better. Where Pogba - it's now being argued - requires others around him to bring out his best. Maguire is the opposite.

As his former Leicester teammate Danny Simpson, once of United, says: "He's improving, he's a leader and he can be whatever he wants to be. The way he brings the ball out from the back and organises everyone is quality."

James and Wan-Bissaka have potential. Good potential. But Maguire is the real thing. A transformative player. A foundation stone to mark this Solskjaer era. He's not one from the academies. Not one fast-tracked through the system. He's done it the hard way. Some would argue the right way. No-one has made it easy for him. And he'll take that attitude into the United dressing room.

As Rodgers highlighted, there's been no sulking from Maguire. No downing of tools as it became clear Leicester would be driving a hard bargain for him. It's the sort of approach to his profession that this United locker room has been sorely lacking.

"You see him on the field but off the field he has been very professional," insisted the Leicester manager. "The supporters need to know how he has been. He has never once sulked, he's just got on with it. He was sick yesterday, like a number of players who were in the group.

"In the circumstances, it would have been very easy for him not to play, but he wanted to be with the squad."

Woodward isn't just negotiating for a player this week. He's negotiating for a change of culture. A genuine beginning of a new team. A new era. And thanks to Rodgers, it's now all out in the open.

Solskjaer will be pleased...

The 30 million recruit from Newcastle delivered a first-half performance that would have excited Leicester supporters.

Speaking after the game, Elliot said: "Even though it was only Leicester's first pre-season friendly of the summer, Prez was so alert during that first half and could have had two or three goals in the end.

"His goal was perfectly taken, after good link-up play between his new team-mates, and it's going to be exciting to see how Brendan Rodgers uses him this season."

For this edition, we run our eye over Manchester United's loanees.

TOP 5 PERFORMERS

1. Dean Henderson, (Season-Long Loan) Sheffield United

Age: 22

Position: Goalkeeper

A simply extraordinary season for the young goalkeeper whose successful campaign has seen his name postered all around the world. Touted as a likely successor to David De Gea, whether it be this season or in the future, Henderson established himself as a keeper of the highest order and with the potential to rise to the top of world football. It was a third successive loan spell for the Englishmen, who made his first outing in the Championship with Sheffield United. The goalkeeper was a crucial cog in the blades promotion to the Premier League. In the process he won the club's young player of the year award along with the community player of the year award. Featuring a total of 46 times in the EFL Championship, Henderson conceded a meagre 41 one goals and kept a colossal 21 clean sheets, comfortably the most in the League. Henderson averaged 2.4 saves per game and even registered an assist. Although it looks likely he will join Sheffield on another loan spell, this season has certainly established Henderson as a Manchester United gem.

Rating: 10/10

2. Axel Tuanzebe, (Season-Long Loan) Aston Villa

Age: 21

Position: Centre-Back

Returning back to Aston Villa for the second time proved to be nothing but successful for the promising defender. It was a season that ended in glory as the Villains won the Championship play-off final to achieve promotion into the Premier League. Tuanzebe made a total of 30 appearances across all competitions playing predominantly at Centre-Back. His season was considerably interrupted as he suffered a serious foot injury that ruled him out for 4 months. Tuanzebe was involved in 6 clean sheets, averaged 1.1 tackles per game and operated at a pass accuracy of 84.5%. He was a crucial component in the Villa defence and has shown overt signs of his large potential.

Rating: 7.5/10

3. Ethan Hamilton, (Six-Month Loan) Rochdale

Age: 20

Position: Central Midfield

He might be one of the more subtle names on this list, however this young midfielder impressed in his first loan spell since joining the United Academy at age 16. After a reasonable first half of the season playing with the United U23 side, Hamilton joined League One side Rochdale for the second half of the season. The Scotsman played 14 games in the league both in central-midfield and left-midfield. In these games Hamilton scored an impressive 4 goals. In his time at the club Rochdale rose from 19th on the table to 14th. An impressive first loan spell for the youngster who will look for more opportunity next season.

Rating: 7/10

4. Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, (Season-Long Loan) Scunthorpe

Age: 22

Position: Left-Back

United's other promising full back took a step down to the English Third Division after shorter spells in the Championship in season's past. The objective for the youngster was to get minutes and thats what was given to him. Borthwick-Jackson made a total of 33 appearances across all competitions for Scunthorpe, taking the number 1 spot at Left-Back before injury prematurely damaged his season in February. During that period, Scunthorpe dropped from 16th to 23rd where they were subsequently relegated. Jackson registered 2 goals when playing at Left Midfield in a 5-3 win against now-promoted Charlton. Without excelling tremendously it was a solid season for the young talent who got a season's worth of experience under his belt.

Rating: 6/10

5. Demetri Mitchell, (Season-Long Loan) Hearts

Age: 22

Position: Left-Back

A similar story to Borthwick-Jackson, as the young defender Mitchell made his second loan spell to Scotland to build up experience. The left sided player made a total of 23 appearances across all competitions at both left-back and left-midfield. In the Scottish Cup Mitchell played a blinder in a 4-0 win, scoring 1 goal and assisting 2. After he suffered a torn muscle and a damaged tendon in February, the youngster's season was cut short. A season of good exposure for Mitchell without setting the world on fire.

Rating: 6/10

FULL LIST OF OTHER MANCHESTER UNITED LOANEES + RANKINGS

Timothy Fosu-Mensah, (Season Long-Loan) Fulham

Age: 21

Position: Right-Back

The young promising defender's 2018/19 campaign was far from ideal. Joining newly promoted side Fulham after the prior season with Crystal Palace seemed only a positive move for the Dutchman, with apparent Premier League opportunity on the horizon. This was far from the reality as the young defender only managed 12 Premier League appearances and 1 in the cup. In this dearth of minutes on the pitch, Fosu-Mensah registered no goals or assists, and even knocked the ball into his own net once, an own goal that cost Fulham the game in a 1-0 loss to bottom side Huddersfield. A setback of a season and it will be interesting to see where this prospect will ply his trade next season.

Rating: 2.5/10

Joel Pereira, (2 Six-Month Loans) Vitoria Setubal / KV Kortrijk

Age: 22

Position: Goalkeeper

Manchester United's forgotten Keeper experienced a rather unassuming season comprising of 2 six-month loan spells. The first with Portuguese first division side Vitoria Setubal where he featured only 10 times, for 2 clean sheets and 16 goals conceded. His second spell saw him ply his trade in Belgium where he made a mere 5 appearances however this time for 2 clean sheets and only 4 goals conceded. If he were to make a case for the potentially vacant number 1 spot, it would have to have been a stronger season than this.

Rating: 3/10

Keiran O'Hara, (Season-Long Loan) Macclesfield

Age: 23

Position: Goalkeeper

The Academy Goalkeeper O'Hara made his way to League Two side Macclesfield Town under manager Sol Campbell for the 2018/19 season. The Manchester born Irishman established himself as Macclesfield's number 1 and appeared 42 times between the sticks. He conceded 68 goals and kept a mere 8 clean sheets with a side that finished 22nd.

Rating: 4/10

*Other Loan Players: James Wilson, Matty Willock, Regan Poole, Callum Whelan, Zak Dearnley and Tom Sang were all released by the club following the season's end.

While football isn't what it used to be, United still practice that tradition in some form, often giving young players a chance to prove themselves in the Premier League. But considering the quality within the club's ranks, the criteria for becoming a first-team player at United is quite high which is why the club sends young players out on loan to assess their performances at clubs in various leagues including the Premier League.

Here's a look at five Manchester United youngsters currently out on loan:

Joel Pereira

22-year-old shot-stopper Joel Pereira was sent out on loan to Liga Nos outfit Vitoria Setubal back in August to aid his development considering the competition he'd face if he remained at United this season.

He's put up some great performances for Vitoria Setubal and has quickly become a fan favourite and regular starter at the club and deservedly so. He's made 20 saves and kept 2 clean sheets in 720 minutes for Setubal.

With Manchester United's first-choice goalkeeper being David De Gea, it's hard to imagine Pereira taking his spot in the near future. But should De Gea opt to leave Old Trafford anytime soon, the Red Devils are likely to give Pereira an opportunity to become United's number one goalkeeper.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah

Fosu-Mensah made a couple of appearances for United in Pre-season and showed why he's regarded as one of the best young full-backs in Europe.

He's agile, fast, and capable of reading and intercept passes, plus he's great at crossing the ball; he's still quite young so he's prone to mistakes every now and then, but for the most part he's a quality player which is why most United fans were unhappy about his loan exit.

He's currently on loan to relegation-strugglers Fulham, who have failed to get their act together since making their way to the Premier League. Fosu-Mensah has not featured for Fulham since being subbed off at half-time in his side's 1-0 defeat against Huddersfield. He doesn't appear to be in Claudio Ranieri's plans as the Italian tactician has not included him in any of his match day squads since taking over at Craven Cottage.

Fosu-Mensah, though, remains a talented player and should Ranieri give him the nod going forward, he's sure to do his best for Fulham.

Axel Tuanzebe

Ever since moving to Aston Villa on loan at the start of the season, Alex Tuanzebe has become a mainstay in the team. After struggling with the Championship's pace in his first few games at Villa, Tuanzebe quickly became accustomed to the league and has since made a name for himself as one of the best defenders in the division.

He's great in the air as evidenced by the 63 aerial duels he's won thus far Tuanzebe has also managed 17 interceptions which is pretty decent considering his age.

The 21-year-old still needs a lot of time to develop into a centre-back capable of playing for a top Premier League side, but judging by his progress with Villa he's definitely on the right track.

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson currently plies his trade in League one side Scunthorpe where he features as a left-back. He's made 17 appearances out of a possible 21 games as Stuart McCall believes him to be the best left-back in the club at the moment.

He's bagged two goals for Scunthorpe so far, both of which coincidentally came in the same game against Charlton Athletic back in October.

Scunthorpe currently sit in 20th-place having garnered just 21 points thus far. Whilst Borthwick-Jackson has played well for them so far, he hasn't been particularly outstanding bar a few games.

James Wilson

Once compared to Liverpool legend Ian Rush, James Wilson is yet to live up to the billing despite enjoying a successful career in Manchester United's youth set-up.

The 23-year-old was loaned out to Scottish Premier League side Aberdeen and has not managed to secure a regular starting berth under manager Derek McInnes. He's made just seven starts so far and has bagged two goals.

The 23-year-old, who spent two years at St. James' Park before being released in the summer, has now linked up with the Iron, penning a deal which will keep him at Glanford Park until the end of the season.

Former Barnet and Lewes wideman El-Mhanni joined the Magpies in the summer of 2016, and featured primarily for the club's under-23 side.

He made his first team debut for United in an FA Cup third round replay victory over Birmingham City in January 2017, before going on to feature in the fourth round defeat at Oxford United in what was his second and final senior outing for the Magpies.
