Ranieri admits he tried to sign the stopper while in charge of Leicester City.

"I think the world of Gaston, I wanted him when I was at Leicester. I'm sure he'll give us a big hand," he said.

"The lads are regaining confidence but we must continue in this way, so as not to throw away our good work."

Samp meet Atalanta today and Ranieri added: "Our next opponents are very strong. Ilicic is a champion, as is Muriel, but in general [Gian Piero] Gasperini's squad has been built very well and has played together for years. It'll take a good performance to beat them."

He was a stand out in different clubs, but the greatest experiences were certainly those in Palermo, Sampdoria and especially in AS Roma, where he worked first with Walter Sabatini and then with Monchi, who called him back to Trigoria for his great knowledge of Italian and international football.

In Genoa, however, when he was working for Sampdoria, he made one of the greatest deals of his career. We are talking about Shkodran Mustafi, today of Arsenal.

The German defender was one of the biggest hits for Sensibile, but the former director of Sampdoria, with modesty, wants to specify, in an exclusive to our microphones: "Mustafi to Sampdoria is not just a great transfer of mine, I'd rather consider it as a great deal of the entire Sampdoria management in the period in which, together with my team, I was the sporting director of the club".

On Mustafi's difficulties with the Arsenal jersey, he says: "Probably he just doesn't get on well with the Premier League, without saying anything more."

It was a great scouting operation from Sensibile. He managed to take a player of the level of Mustafi from Everton in the Premier League, moreover for free and being capable of competing in Serie B.

However, the times of the Sampdoria that Sensibile knew are long gone, in this exclusive for Tribalfootball.com, the former manager of Palermo explains the reasons why he prefers not to comment on the current club situation (the president is now Massimo Ferrero).

Sensible said: "Usually, I only comment on situations that I directly know. So, not knowing the situation of Ferrero's Sampdoria, I can only say, as an insider, that especially in the early years everything has been done very well in terms of sporting results and in terms of market and infrastructure improvements."

At present, Sampdoria is having a difficult time, they're last in the standings in Serie A and there has just been a change of coach, with the sacking of former AS Roma's boss Eusebio Di Francesco in favour of Claudio Ranieri, the legend of Leicester City.

Adds Sensibile, "I can't comment on the latest events, those related to the possible future of the Club, because I don't know the situation from the inside.".

Ferrero says he'll spend, despite coming close to selling up this season.

He told a fan on social media, "Thanks for your support. The fact that the fans insult me is part of the game," he wrote.

"And I'm the lesser evil. I would like to reassure and comfort you all that we'll leave this difficult period.

"There'll be an opening to intervene on the market in January and I'll take care of it. Forza Samp."

It marked Ranieri's first game in charge.

The lads worked very well in training, but you can only tell so much in that situation," he told Sky Sport Italia.

Roma are a good team, they keep possession, but we wanted to push them towards the wings, as they are above all dangerous through the middle. We weren't that interested in possession."

Ranieri celebrates his 68th birthday on Sunday and joked when asked about his surprise pick of Andrea Bertolacci.

I preferred to be called a wily old fox when I was young, as now it feels a little too close to home! Maybe you think I'm going senile

I told Bertolacci to play as long as he could and then I'd bring in Albin Ekdal, who arrived very tired after international duty. I was satisfied with the midfield, combining experience with youth. I had wanted Bertolacci in a more advanced position, closer to Quagliarella, but after a while there were too many gaps and I asked him to remain back there to protect the defence."

But Ranieri said, I've been through a lot in my career, but the important thing is what happens on the field.

"The players and I need to show no interest in what is going on off the pitch.

"The fans were supporting us with a positive wind in our sails and that is what we needed."

As he did last season at Roma, Ranieri has succeeded Eusebio Di Francesco as Samp coach.

He said, "Replacing Di Francesco again is bizarre, I hope he will soon find a team because he is good.

"It is a joke of destiny, but we will try to do the maximum on the field and then the best one will win.

"I am a positive person and evidently had to go like this: my last team was Roma and I start again against the Giallorossi."

Ranieri replaces Eusebio di Francesco, who was sacked on Monday with the club bottom of Serie A after six defeats in seven matches.

The 67-year-old Italian also succeeded Di Francesco at Roma in March on a contract until the end of last season.

It is his 20th managerial appointment and a ninth spell as a boss in Italy's top flight.

Ranieri was dismissed by Leicester nine months after famously winning the 2016 Premier League title despite beginning the campaign as 5,000-1 outsiders.

He spent the 2017-18 season at Ligue 1 side Nantes in France, before returning to the English top flight with Fulham in November 2018.

Sacked by the Cottagers after only 106 days in charge, Ranieri then took over at Roma, where he began his career as a player.

He guided them to sixth in Serie A last season, finishing three points behind the Champions League places.

Vialli's consortium confirmed earlier in the week that they could not agree a price with Samp president Massimo Ferrero.

The reason is very simple, we didn't agree a price with Ferrero," he told Sky Sport Italia.

It's no-one's fault. Ferrero set a price and it wasn't possible to find a meeting point.

We regret that this thing became public and, in some way, affected the morale and results of the team, but we have a clear conscience: in the last 13 months we've only made two official announcements, and this is the first time I've talked about it personally.

I'm sorry because, apart from the time and energy I've invested, I was convinced that I could do a good job with the people already working at the club who, at present, aren't getting the credit they deserve.

I would've worked with passion, courage and humility to represent the people connected to Sampdoria in the best way."

TMW says Everton had scouts posted at the Estadio Nuevo Arcangel in Cordova, where they checked on Chabot in action for Germany U21 against Spain.

The defender was outstanding in the friendly, outshining Spain star Dani Olmo, of Dinamo Zagreb.

Chabot only moved to Samp in May from Groningen for 3.7m.

The defender is viewed at Samp as a long-term centre-half.

Eusebio Di Francesco was sacked by Samp this week.

And should Ranieri be hired, it would mean for the second time in only a few months, Ranieri will be replacing Di Francesco, having taken over as caretaker manager at Roma in March.

Ranieri met with Samp directors last night, with significant steps taken in reaching an agreement.

He has been offered a contract to the end of the season worth 1m plus bonuses, with automatic renewal for another season if Samp avoid relegation.
