The two clubs have different visions. I always acted as the ant and not the grasshopper.
"I didn't criticise them. It all started during a phone-in when I said Totti's selfie was inopportune, something I still believe. It would've been better to do that after the game and not during.
"I also consider Juventus to be stronger than Roma. I am sorry that a technical evaluation should be followed by the verbal assault I was subjected to."
Read more on Tribal Football Sat, 17 Jan 2015 23:17:39 +1100 Man Utd kids kickoff 2015 with German Cup win
Manchester United have kicked off 2015 with victory in the Mercedes-Benz Junior Cup in Germany.
After a 0-0 draw in the final with VfB Stuttgart in Sindelfingen, Joel Castro Pereira saved three of the Germans' spot-kicks to earn the six-a-side tournament's trophy.
The entire Under-19 competition was held over the weekend, with eight teams participating - four of which came from the host country. United and their fellow finalists were accompanied by Celtic, Schalke 04, Grasshopper Club Zurich, Fenerbahce, Hoffenheim and Borussia Monchengladbach.
Having finished third in 2014's contest, the Reds overcame early disappointment against the Grasshoppers in this year's offering by beating Stuttgart and Schalke, before suffering defeat to Fenerbahce.
A win over Hoffenheim, followed by revenge against United's first opponents in the form of a 6-0 semi-final victory over Grasshoppers ensured a path to the final for the Reds, where skipper Pereira proved to be the hero and Joe Riley was awarded the Player of the Tournament prize afterwards.
Read more on Tribal Football Mon, 05 Jan 2015 07:04:18 +1100 Barnet snap up West Ham goalkeeper Raphael Spiegel
West Ham United goalkeeper Raphael Spiegel has joined Vanarama Conference leaders Barnet on a month-long loan deal.
The 21-year-old stopper will get his first taste of senior football in England during his time with the Bees, who are currently six points clear at the top of their division.
Spiegel has made eight appearances for the Hammers' U21 side this season and was briefly on loan with Sky Bet League One side Crawley Town at the start of the campaign.
He arrived at the Boleyn Ground in 2012 from Swiss club Grasshopper and has represented Switzerland up to U21 level.
For the big stories and the banter follow us on Twitter: @tribalfootball
Read more on Tribal Football Thu, 27 Nov 2014 09:30:41 +1100 Ex-Switzerland international Vega urges England patience for Hodgson
Ramon Vega believes England needs to have patience with manager Roy Hodgson.
The 43-year old played under Hodgson in the Switzerland national team between 1993 and 1995 and believes that the Three Lions will certainly improve under his guidance.
England underperformed at this year's World Cup in Brazil but Vega, formerly of Grasshopper, Tottenham and Watford, told talkSPORT's Drivetime suggests that Hodgson is the right man to take English football forward.
"Switzerland are on the football map because of Roy, they are where they are today because of him," Vega said.
"When Hodgson took charge Switzerland didn't really exist in the football world, everyone in the country was just talking about cuckoo clocks, chocolate and banking.
"But now we've got some quality players who are playing abroad, while our youth team won the Under-17 World Cup in 2009.
"The most important part of Roy's time as boss is that he put a proper academy structure in place from the bottom to the top.
"That's why today we've got a lot of youth players coming into the first team.
"I think England should look into that and do something similar and I think Roy is on his way to doing that, but the question is whether he is given the time to do it properly."
For breaking stories and all the great banter like us on Facebook:
Read more on Tribal Football Mon, 08 Sep 2014 20:35:04 +1000 WORLD CUP FORECAST: Group E - Can Switzerland provide Hitzfeld with a fond farewell?
Switzerland national manager Ottmar Hitzfeld will bring to an end a savagely successful coaching career at the culmination of the 2014 World Cup.
The 65-year old German announced late last year that he will pull the pin on a managerial journey that has seen him win seven Bundesliga titles - five with Bayern Munich and two with Borussia Dortmund - one Champions League trophy (with Bayern), two Swiss Super Leagues (both with Grasshopper) and multiple cups in both Germany and Switzerland.
He has been at the helm of Swiss football since 2008, guiding the team to the finals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where they were eliminated at the group stage.
In 2014, Hitzfeld will take with him to Brazil a relatively young squad that appeared to breeze through their modest European qualifying group which included Iceland, Slovenia, Norway, Albania and Cyprus.
While winning the group comfortably, La Nati scored just 17 goals in their 10 outings with defender Fabian Schar at the top of the scorers list with three.
This in itself provides a major problem as it indicates the Swiss lack any quality goalscorers which generally makes it fairly difficult to progress to the latter stages of a World Cup.
Hopefully, on the big stage, they can deliver for Hitzfeld and give the 'The General' the sendoff he so richly deserves by at least making it through to the knockout phase.
Switzerland
Manager: Ottmar Hitzfeld
Fixtures: Ecuador - June 15 (Brasilia), France - June 20 (Salvador), Honduras - June 25 (Manaus)
Past outings against group opponents: Switzerland and Ecuador have never met at senior international level.
The Swiss have taken on neighbours France on 36 occasions, winning 12 times, drawing nine times and losing on 15 occasions. The most recent encounter was at the '06 WC when they held the French to a 0-0 draw in Germany.
Switzerland and Honduras have only came up against each other on one occasion which was at the 2010 World Cup resulting in a 0-0 draw in the group stage.
Key players: Xherdan Shaqiri (Bayern Munich), Gokhan Inler (Napoli), Granit Xhaka (Borussia Monchengladbach), Stephan Lichtsteiner (Juventus)
World Cup utopia: Beating France and topping Group E.
Doomsday scenario: Finishing behind Ecuador and Honduras in the group stage.
Qualified by virtue of: Winning their group in UEFA qualifying.
Best result at a World Cup: Quarter-Finals (1934, 1938, 1954)
tribal's forecast:
As discussed, the biggest issue for Switzerland will be the absence of true scoring power.
Sure, the defence is fairly organized which was evidenced by the fact they only gave away six goals in qualifying you need to put them in at the other end to win games of football.
The four strikers named by Hitzfeld are all unproven at international level but some of them have had decent season at club level with Mario Gavranovic scoring 13 times for Zurich, Admir Mehmedi netting 12 goals for Freiburg and Josip Drmic, who could be their wildcard, slotting home 17 goals for FC Nurnberg despite their relegation battle.
Promising midfielders Shaqiri and Xhaka have an abundance of talent and will need to live up to their potential to give the attackers enough supply while the trusty Inler and Tranquillo Barnetta will provide experience in the middle of the pitch.
Lichtsteiner is expected to lead a defence consisting of up-and-comers Schar and Ricardo Rodriguez while Wolfsburg veteran Diego Benaglio will be propping up the miserly back four from goals.
With no disrespect to Ecuador and Honduras, it is a blessing in disguise that Switzerland have been drawn in this group because I feel they would battle to get out of any other.
If they can get the better of the Ecuadorians in their opening fixture, then they should not have too many problems at least grabbing a top-two finish in Group E but it is after that where it gets considerably harder for the Swiss.
Prediction: Round of 16.
For breaking stories and all the great banter like us on Facebook:
Read more on Tribal Football Sun, 25 May 2014 11:45:40 +1000 Hull recall Jakupovic from Leyton Orient
Hull City have recalled goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic from his loan spell with Leyton Orient.
The 29-year old Bosnian-born Swiss gloveman joined the League One O's earlier this month and was due to stay at the Matchroom Stadium until February 8.
However, the Tigers have lost number one keeper Allan McGregor for three matches following his red card against Crystal Palace on Tuesday which has forced Steve Bruce to recall Jakupovic.
Orient boss Russell Slade was grateful for the efforts of the former Grasshopper custodian who kept three clean sheets in four outings in the third tier.
"We'd like to thank Eldin for all his efforts here over the last few games and he's done a fantastic job," Slade said.
"It's unfortunate for us but the process of finding a replacement has already started."
For breaking stories and all the great banter like us on Facebook:
Read more on Tribal Football Wed, 29 Jan 2014 22:26:45 +1100 West Ham get serious about ex-Fulham striker Petric
Former Fulham striker Mladen Petric is interesting West Ham United boss Sam Allardyce.
The Croatian, 32, remains a free agent and is being linked with the Hammers following a new injury setback suffered by Andy Carroll.
The Daily Mail says there are concerns about the Croatian forward's fitness but Allardyce remains keen on a player who has turned out for Baden, Basel, Grasshopper, Borussia Dortmund and Hamburg.
For the big stories and the banter follow us on Twitter: @tribalfootball
Read more on Tribal Football Tue, 10 Sep 2013 08:18:48 +1000
