Crystal Palace were hoping to build on their massive 2-1 win at Old Trafford against Manchester United at the weekend.

But Hodsgon made several changes to his starting lineup, giving the likes of James McCarthy and Sam Woods their first starts of the season.

During the post-match press conference, Hodgson said: "Very true [it was a come down from Saturday]. I believe the team we put out tonight would've been capable of winning the game.

"It was important for some players to show what they can do; we had injuries to Ward and Schlupp anyway, and one or two players coming back from injury like Schlupp that we didn't really want to take a chance on.

"But having said all of that, the starting line-up today, is a starting line-up in my opinion was going to be capable of winning the game and they didn't because we didn't play well enough and Colchester played very well."

He's keen to make a big impression with the club this season.

McLeod said: "It was a good experience in the two years at Leicester, and I am also glad that I experienced being at Maldon.

"It's a different type of football and I feel like I have learned a lot from being there, and it has made me into more of a versatile player.

"I'm getting stronger and more flexible as my rehab continues and I am confident I will come back stronger.

"The target is to get into the first team and progress from there."

The Sun says West Ham and Leicester are monitoring Chilvers.

The midfielder has impressed for the U's Under-23 side and his performances have been rewarded with a senior debut in the 3-0 home win against Newport last month.

Chilvers, 18, can operate in central midfield but his ability and eye for goal allows him to push forward and play as a No 10.

The Premier League pair have been tracking his progress as he has risen through the ranks at the Jobserve Community Stadium and could be ready to make their move this summer.

Roberts has been told by Newcastle United he won't be getting a new deal - according to Colchester boss John McGreal.

Roberts is back at United after his loan deal was cut short at Layer Road this week.

But McGreal told the media: said: Cal was told the other week by Newcastle that he wasn't getting a contract.

His head went a little bit to be fair because I think he was thinking that there was a possibility of him getting a contract there.

He's been there all his career and played for them this year.

It's been tough for Cal and he's been away from home.

He's still got a bit of a sore ankle and he wants to get that right and I think Newcastle pulled him back to get him some training and get him into the under-23s and put a little bit into the shop window."

When asked if he would sign Roberts on a free transfer, McGreal stated: We know he'll be out of contract and Newcastle have told him.

We'd consider everyone in the summer because at this moment in time, recruitment drives and things are getting flagged up."
