Real Madrid midfielder Kroos announces his retirement

Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos has announced his retirement.

The veteran will hang up the boots after Germany's Euros campaign.

In an open letter, Kroos stated: "July 17, 2014, the day of my presentation at Real Madrid, the day that changed my life. My life as a footballer, but above all as a person. It was the beginning of a new life in the largest Club in the world. Today, after 10 years, at the end of the season, this life comes to an end. I will never forget this exciting and successful decade.

"I would especially like to thank President Florentino Pérez, the Club and all those who welcomed me with an open heart and trusted me. But above all I want to thank you, dear Madrid players, for your love and support from the first day to the last. At the same time, this decision means that my career as an active footballer will end this summer after the Euro Cup. As I have always said, Real Madrid is and will be my last club.

"Today I am happy and proud to have found in my head and in my heart the right moment for this decision. My ambition was always to finish my career at the top of my level. From this moment on, there is only one main thought in my mind and nothing will separate me from this: Go for 15!!! ¡MADRID IS GOING AND NOTHING ELSE!"
