Pundit Menes hails Real Madrid striker Benzema after knocking off Henry's Arsenal record

French pundit Pierre Menes has revealed Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has broken a major goalscoring record.

Benzema is now the highest goalscoring Frenchman for one club.

As Menes explained on Yahoo Sports: "There was an event that was a little unnoticed, that is, when Karim Benzema scored against Leganes, the Real victory 5-0, he scored his 229th goal in the colours of Real and thus broke the record of Thierry Henry with 228 goals with Arsenal.

"So did we really need this record to know that Karim Benzema was a great player? Obviously not. Do we need this record to revive the eternal controversy, the hypothetical hypothetical, who knows, a return for Karim Benzema to the national team? Obviously not.

"We know very well that with Didier Deschamps, even if the latter was not always very clear on the reasons, was always more than clear on his will, since Karim Benzema will never play in Blue while Deschamps is coach. We can regret it.

"Personally, I regret it because, whatever the faults that can be blamed on Karim Benzema, I think he has been sufficiently punished."
